Ossi’s global music studies at Sibelius Academy, where has completed both his undergraduate and masters studies, have profoundly shaped his approach to music. Overseas trips to Senegal, Mali, Scotland, and Cuba have enriched his understanding of the interplay between rhythm and melody in percussion traditions. These experiences - particularly within West African drum traditions - have informed his artistic research, highlighting the close relationship between rhythm, language, and storytelling.
Ossi’s research focuses on the diversity and creativity of rhythm as a foundation for composition. Through intensive research and practice, he has become interested in the ability of percussion instruments to articulate melodies and produce speech-like textures. He emphasizes the holistic activation of physical learning, exploring its creative possibilities in teaching and musical competence. Ossi’s work advocates for appreciating the melodic properties of drums and their storytelling capabilities, aiming to integrate these insights into music composition and pedagogy.
